The Importance of Communication in Relationships

Communication—the human connection—is the key to personal and career success.”

Paul J. Meyer

Communication is an integral part of human connection. When effective communication is used in a relationship, respect and trust for the other person is strengthened. It is true that relationships have their ups and downs and twists and turns. Even the closest of friends argue on certain matters. But if both people in the relationship are able to implement the use of good communication strategies, it will be easier for them to understand each other’s point of view and deal with the issue at hand.

Without communication, people would find it difficult to build and maintain relationships with one another. Communication allows individuals to express their feelings, thoughts, and ideas with others. The manner in which we communicate is also important. Not all styles of communication are beneficial. There are certain ways in which people communicate that may cause harm to themselves and those around them.

Communication is not all about talking. There is also such thing as non-verbal communication. Elements of non-verbal communication include eye contact, facial expressions, voice fluctuation, and body posture. These types of body language play an important role in communication just as speaking does. In fact, non-verbal communication is more powerful than verbal communication.

A person’s body language conveys more honesty than their words. For instance, you and your classmates just took an important and difficult exam. After the results were given, you ask your best friend if she did well in the said exam. She says yes and gives you a smile that does not seem to reach her eyes, which look sad and teary.

Therefore, it is important to try to understand a person not only through the words that come from their mouth but also through their body language. The importance of communication in relationships cannot and should not be underestimated.
